Harbour Master
Experience as Ship’s Master normally expected (MCA STCW II/2) or Marine Pilot apprenticeship scheme
Diploma in Port Management (National Sea Training Centre, Lloyd's Maritime Academy, Informa Maritime & Transport)
Harbour Master Certificate Scheme (Nautical Institute)
Management Certificate and Diploma Scheme (Nautical Institute)
Deputy Harbour Master
Diploma in Port Management ( National Sea Training Centre, Lloyd's Maritime Academy, Informa Maritime & Transport) Hydrogrpahic Surveyor
Graduate entry, usually BSc or MSC in hydrography, marine geography, marine sciences, ocean exploration or geomatics.
OR relevant forces training in:

Leading Seaman HM(H)
Port Operations Manager
Diploma in Port Management ( National Sea Training Centre, Lloyd's Maritime Academy, Informa Maritime & Transport) Marine Pilot

Level 2 S/NVQ in Stevedoring (EDEXCEL)
Level 2 S/NVQ in Marine Operations (Port) (EDEXCEL)
The above two qualifications expire September 2006. To be replaced by:
Level 2 S/NVQ in Port Operations (EAL)
If carrying out fork lift truck operations, must hold relevant certification meeting the Approved Code of Practice L117 for rider operated lift trucks.
For example certification under:
- AITT (Association of Industrial Truck Trainers)
- ITSSAR (Independent Training Standards Scheme & Register)
- RTITB (Road Transport Industry Training Board Ltd)
- CITB-Construction Skills
- Lantra
- National Plant Operators Registration Scheme
These may lead to the following qualifications:
- Level 2 S/NVQ in Specialised Plant and Machinery Operations, Lifting and Transferring (City and Guilds)
- Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Forklift Truck Operations (NPTC)
Marine MCA qualifications appropriate to the type and class of vessel
eg Boatmasters Licence or Coastal Skipper; STCW regulations
Personal Sea Survival certificate
Firefighting
VHF Operator’s Certificate
First Aid Certification
Certificate of Medical Fitness

Technician
Electricians would be required to hold a Level 3 qualification such as an S/NVQ in Electrical and Electronic Servicing (EAL / City and Guilds)
A fitter would be expected to hold Level 3 (or equivalent time served) such as an S/NVQ in Engineering Maintenance (EAL / ETCAL / City and Guilds) or an S/NVQ in Engineering Technical Support (EAL / ETCAL/ City and Guilds). Occasional recruitment at Level 2.
